The organisers
• Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe (CPMR)
The CPMR brings together around 160 regions from 28 States, both members and non-members of the European Union. Representing almost 200 million people, it campaigns in favour of a more balanced development of the Community territory.
• Senegal
This Summit is organised in close association with the Senegalese Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of International Cooperation, Spatial Planning, Air Transport and Infrastructures, through the Directorate of decentralised cooperation.
The Directorate of decentralised cooperation has the overall objective of establishing a concerted, coherent and visible decentralised cooperation policy. It is set up as a Platform of services to foster the promotion of decentralised cooperation and to support local authorities in the domain of decentralised cooperation in Senegal.
Alongside these organisers, a Steering Committee and a Scientific Committee have been set up
Steering Committee
A Steering Committee has been set up and has met three times in 2009 to ensure the effective preparation of the Summit. Its members include the Senegalese authorities, FAO, European Commission, UNDP, French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, French Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, French Development Agency, FOGAR and CPMR in addition to several CPMR member Regions. The working sessions have helped to detail the aims of the Summit, draft an agenda and schedule and plan the logistics for hosting and holding the event.
Scientific Committee
In order to prepare the content of the Summit in a relevant way, a Scientific Committee bringing together renowned international food security experts has been set up to contribute - alongside the Steering Committee - towards drafting working documents, approving the Summit agenda, finding relevant speakers from the five continents and identifying decentralised cooperation projects and successful experiences in local food and agriculture development. It is helping to target the specific added value the regional tier can provide in the collective efforts to ensure food security.
